some have asked about why i would choose midwives
over your standard OB.
here’s the deal:
initially, i went with my gut.
this place felt right to me when it was recommended.
i had talked to many women out here and received various opinions about the doctors.
i didn’t want to have a bad opinion about mine.
the main difference between the two is that midwives specialize in low-risk pregnancy
and promote natural childbirth as much as possible-
even more than that- they are known for being as hands-off in the pregnancy process.
mom makes the call on how its going to go.
and they will guide you to it the best way.
on the other hand,
an OB can handle issues with complications and higher risk pregnancies,
but they are trained to “actively manage” the birth process.
meaning, “well, how we do it here is this….”
i have 3 midwives that i meet with,
so any one of them can deliver when its time
and i will feel comfortable with all of them.
they do work with a male OB as well,
in the event that one is needed,
but generally he is for those who prefer him.
usually you think of midwives when you think of the more uncommon births:
at-home deliveries, or in-water births…
they will give you the options, and you can decide,
usually women who go with midwives
want it to go a certain way – and that way is usually naturally.
want it to go a certain way – and that way is usually naturally.
i am going to go with a natural birth— no drugs, but in a hospital.
that way, if anything does come up,
we’re good to go.
no tub, though i heard it is pretty great.
the hospital we are most likely going with
has tubs you can sit in until you deliver to keepyou comfortable,
but then you hop out when its time….

i want to be alert, i want my baby to be alert,
i want to feel what’s going on so i can help.
it is quicker, less chance of tearing,
and usually means a much quicker recovery.
i know it isn’t for everyone,
and by no means do i judge anyone who chooses an alternative,
but its my plan, and i plan to stick to it.

I'm due in January with our first baby, and am planning the same birth you are: natural, in a hospital, with a midwife. The only unfortunate thing is I live in a small town and only have one clinic to choose from. There are several midwives, however, so my only hope is that one of them will be there when I deliver.
By the way, I would recommend reading "Ina May's Guide to
You dont know me, but I read your blog from time to time. I think it is wonderful that you are comfortable with your decision and that you want to deliver naturally. I hope to do the same thing some day. People are often very opinionated on this matter. Hope everything goes great for you!
You go girl! I say- do whatever you want! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I, personally, will have only Chantelle births- because I tell all my other children in heaven they have to come the same way- but I'll have to tell you about my friend Tracy's birth experience sometime. She is a midwife herself and delivered her baby by herself. She said it was awesome. Extreme
natural childbirth is the bomb…i can say that…cuz i know. it's miraculous being fully present, and just listening to your body, it knows what to do!!!! midwives are the bomb, too! are you taking any natural childbirth classes? I highly recommend the Bradley Method. super awesome. super helpful. super great birth. my, aren't you becoming quite the hippie. 😉 welcome to the club.
That's so awesome! I love the midwife's approach to childbirth…it totally resonates with me!!! I have done 2 natural births, and one I had an epidural…and let me tell you – natural childbirth is AMAZING! It is hard, but wonderful and empowering and such an incredible experience!!! I took a hypnobirthing class, and I can't recommend it enough! It was awesome!!! Good luck, you'
Good explanation! I used midwives and loved it. I have the same one again as last time. Sounds like you know a lot of natural birth supporters, but know that you have one more in me. 🙂 If you ever want to talk natural birth/natural parenting, hit me up!
good for you Meg. I wanted to go natural too-then my son happened. I hope you don't get a huge 10 and half pounder in there, 2 feet long with a ginormous head so you can actually follow through with the natural thing.
that's awesome! have you seen "the business of being born"? its a documentary about why natural childbirth is so rewarding. I so wish i had known more & thought about other options like this before i had my first. now i dont have alot of options after having 2c/sections.
good for you! 🙂
I didn't know you were planning to go natural! You go girl!! I'm so proud of you sister! 🙂
I had to laugh at Liz's comment, because I had the exact same experience. I had totally planned to do the natural thing. Took the classes, had the support of my husband, the DR's…etc. But ended up with an epidural in the end and was glad I did because my son was HUGE (almost 10 pounds, 16 inch head). At first I was totally bummed (felt like a failture for not being able to do it
I've had 2 kids, and 2 completely opposite experiences. You won't regret taking control and doing it! Your body was made for this, you will rock!!
Miss you, by the way. You look awesome.
