oh, sorry to get you all excited.

i’m sure you came here thinking i was going to get all political on you and attempt to sway you into my very strong opinions and therefore lead to a very negative awful debate in the comments about how dumb i am.

i will say this,

i haven’t followed politics much since i lived in DC.

i lived there in the fall of ’08, when this was all happening last time.
and it was a nasty time to be a conservative in the nations capital and in a high school that is 97% black.

i was open minded, i listened, and took in quite a bit.
i even read a good boo a friend gave me about politics from which i learned a lot…
i taught a unit to my students in one of my classes about reading the media.
understanding where it is coming from, because everyone has an opinion,
there is no such thing as objective journalism.
it was a good eye opener for those high school kids who didn’t have to care yet,
and therefore just ate up what they were fed…

but in all the hoopla of the election, prop 8 was happening.
i shared my opinions quite boldly then about my feelings and opinions about marriage and about same-sex attraction… and i still feel them.

i learned that to survive in DC, you HAD to care about politics.
you have to be passionate, and opinionated, and have the ability to articulate those opinions.
or you might as well be useless to society.
the fact that i didn’t work “on the hill” or for a senator meant that whatever i did, i at least had to know where i stood on things…

other than the marriage topic,
i was a faker.

i didn’t care.

here’s why:
when someone posts their opinion about politics, a leader,
or a belief of any kind these days,
for some reason that gives anyone who reads it license to tell them how royally messed up their thinking is, how uneducated they are, or how insensitive to everyone else who believes something different is….

i have seen some of the nicest people get thrashed on facebook,
and in blogs over opinions about politics,
and even more upsetting, religion.

and for what?
did you win anybody over to “your side?”
probably not.

do you feel better now that you’ve shared it?
no.
not now that you’ve had it shoved back down your throat you don’t!

so i steer clear.

i will say that i am far more intrigued by this election than the last.

so i might get more into politics if things look up.
that doesn’t mean i will care to debate about it though…
i’ll leave that to the big dogs.

i side with Ellen…

“i don’t follow politics.
and i’m a much happier person.”
amen, girlfriend.
