Orange Monkey Pull Apart Bread

Last year, I was living with my parents over the holidays while we were in transition and moving to Arizona. My husband was still in San Diego working and I was with my two kids, trying to make Christmas feel special even though everything was a bit discombobulated.

On Christmas Eve, after we went to my in-laws, we came home and mom was lamenting that she didn’t make anything special for Christmas morning. She usually makes a breakfast something, including but not generally limited to her insane orange rolls that would make you cry. In my mom’s true style though, she found some pre-made dough in the house and went at it, throwing together a “pre-fabbed” version of her orange rolls and she made this orange monkey pull-apart bread.

Christmas morning, after we did the early morning shift at my in-laws, we came back to my family just digging in to what was one of the yummier breakfast goodies I have ever had. We laughed all morning at how ironic is was that the one time we put the least amount of effort in, we got the most amazing result. You can bet we will be making this again for Christmas this year! This Orange Monkey Pull-apart Bread is the perfect amount of gooey and sweet, and beautiful, and just perfect for a morning like Christmas. I mean, any other time it would be great too. Having the large and fluffy biscuits makes this recipe work so well because they fill a bundt pan beautifully and the butter in them makes them brown up so lovely in the pan. Yet again, mom nailed it.


Orange Monkey Bread for Christmas Morning


  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1.2 cup butter, melted
  • zest of 2 oranges
  • 2 cans Immaculate Flaky Biscuits[], quartered {found in refrigerated section of Whole Foods}

  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, room temperature
  • 1 tsp orange extract
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract {not flavoring}
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice

what to do

Preheat oven to 350 {or 375 Convection}.

Combine sugar, butter, and zest and coat dough pieces with the mixture.

Spray bundt pan with cooking spray and fill with coated dough. Bake in the oven for 40 min or until top is brown. {not golden, or the inside will not be cooked through}

While bread bakes, combine powdered sugar and butter with a wise until completely incorporated and all lumps disappear, then add orange and vanilla extracts and combine. Slowly add in orange juice, stirring as you go until mixture is the consistency of thinner icing. You will not likely use all of the orange juice.

Remove bread from oven and turn over on a plate immediately and put icing on while hot so it melts down the sides.
