In the last few years, I have learned that as my family and responsibilities have grown, my ability to spend time and money on myself has slowly…disintegrated into thin air. And of course the need to feel better is at its peak as a mom. If mom doesn’t feel great, let’s face it, no one does.

So, for the last few years, though I have a few friends who are hair stylists, I opt to color my own hair a few times a year because it is obviously tons cheaper and doesn’t require a few hours and a babysitter to make it happen. I leave the cutting to the professionals though.

I was so excited when Clairol Nice ’n Easy reached out because I was in massive need of a new color and excited to share how easy it is to color at home. I have a handful of friends who never would have thought to because it sounds like more work, or less professional…etc. I have found just as great, and sometimes better results from coloring at home than in a salon, so why not?

For reference, this is what my hair looked like the LAST time I got it colored, and I loved it. In fact, I wished I had done tons more pink so it was a bit more obvious…

And after the pink faded, it looked more like this, {right before we shot the video and colored it!} which I love, but it started to look dry and my natural dark on top was turning a bit ashy-toned.

So, this was tons of fun, I got to color my hair for you on camera so you can see a) that even I can do it, and b) that it really did turn out awesome. They did a fabulous job on this video and it was such a fun day of shooting so I hope you like it. I’m a bit ridiculous of course, but you expected that, right? And it should be noted, this was filmed while I was staying at my mom’s house, so for those of you who recognize her house in the background- you’d be correct.

Here’s what the color looks like after! I think it’s so clean and fresh and feels totally natural to me.

new natural black hair color

In case you don’t make it through all 3 minutes, here’s what you should know about this color:

It lasts up to 8 WEEKS {and when it’s in the same color family as my hair, I’ve had it last longer than that.} It’s great stuff.

I did a SKIN ALLERGY TEST real quick to be sure that the color wouldn’t hurt my skin at all. Takes minutes and all the instructions are in there, but it’s a good idea to do that no matter what color or brand you use just to be safe!

It COVERS GRAY 100%. And there are 45 different shades to choose from, so you can get creative. I used to have pink in my hair and I love going from light to dark and changing it up often. So after I have gone through a few rounds of lighter color or highlights and I need a reset and refresh, the at-home natural dark and auburn shades are the perfect reboot for my hair. Sometimes I use a brown with more red, but this time I went with a dark mahogany black so that it would be a clean and shiny change from my ombre ends that were looking super dry and damaged. Since my natural color is pretty dark, it always feels great to do a natural black, just darker than my real color so it’s fresh and clean. Before we chose a shade, I sent a photo over to a consultant who then gave me a few ideas of what would look great. I picked the bolder option and I’m glad I did. I LOVE the dark so much!

Often my husband does my coloring, because I have so. much. hair, that I feel like coloring my hair is like scrunching a pom pom, it never ends and you always seem to find more… but doing it on my own was super EASY, and I feel like I have a new world opened up to me, I can try out a bunch of fun stuff because I can change it when I want without fear of my hair turning any crazy color for doing it wrong.
