We have been having family movie nights with the kids all summer long and it has been such a great tradition! My sister in law mentioned that they were doing it at there house and we jumped on it. As kids, we had pizza EVERY Friday night with movie night snacks, and had friends over for what we called “Fun Nights” and we could stay up later and watch TGIF or movies. I loved that they were keeping that tradition and it made our summer weeks go by a lot smoother here because the kids would say, “what is today? oh, so only 2 more nights till movie night?!”
We have a few ways we make it fun: “vintage” movies/classics, fun movie night snacks, and counting down to the new/awesome movies, like Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie.
“Vintage” movies are the ones mom and dad watched as kids. I want my kids to know the classic kid movies that we loved, and so many of them have such great moral lessons or feel good stories. It’s been fun to watch what movies are available to purchase and stream right away because we’ve been able to get lots of movies that we can share with the kids that they now ask to watch again!
As far as movie night snacks go, we of course have pizza, because that’s what makes it movie night for them, but we usually bust out the popcorn and a few other snacks to make it feel more like an “occasion”. This time, we had Pop Secret Popcorn because it’s a high quality snack I can feel good about feeding the family. And the butter flavor is on point! We also had Lance Crackers, which have been around for 100 years so they remind me of my childhood. They are the two awesome crackers with a yummy spread between. We keep these around for lunches and snacks because they don’t have high fructose corn syrup, they use real cheese and peanut butter, and they have 5 grams of protein, so they are a great grab and go snack for my bottomless tanks. We also added a little colorful candy this time too to have some salty and sweet. All of these snacks we purchased at Walmart.
Over the summer, some of my son’s favorite movies came out on video that he didn’t get to see in the theatre cause I was so pregnant and tired that we just didn’t. #sorrydude He likes to check on iTunes for the latest movies and see when they come out. Over the summer, my mom was watching him while we were out of town and she saw that Captain Underpants was in theaters. She told him if he read the whole book, that she’d take him to see it. I wish I had video of her reading it to him for the first time, because I called in the middle of it, and he was giggling like I’ve never seen! Every time, she read, “Tra la LAAAA!” {Something the Captain says} he lost it. I LOVE when movies are made from books so I can help promote reading with my kids. It just so happens that this one is so full of heart and fun for the whole family so it’s the perfect movie night movie. And it’s been getting such great reviews. I’m sure having Kevin Hart and Ed Helms as the two main characters only helps that. My kids have seen the movie, and he’s now obsessed with the book and wants to collect all of them! They are counting down to September 12th when we can buy the movie at Walmart and I’m excited to watch it with him. He’s going to be hilarious.
{The Captain Underpants DVD will be available in Walmart stores 9/12! Be sure to reserve your copy now by pre-ordering today! While supplies last.}
And, my mother-in-law was getting rid of lots of art in her recent move, and she let us take this perfect movie room print. Works perfect, right?
Some other fun ways to kick up your movie night snacks game would be with some yummy popcorn recipes or snack mixes. Here’s a few we have made and love!
A crowd favorite for sure!
Kids love this one because it goes well with popcorn too and mixing and matching the candy makes different candy bar flavors in your mouth!
