I am absolutely in denial that I just took my first kid school shopping, but alas, it happened. And I think this will need to be a tradition to do a photoshoot in his back-to-school clothes. He’s growing up, and every day he surprises me with what he knows. He’s still testing me to see what he can get away with, but he’s a sweet boy and he’s so excited to finally be going to school. It was a blast to shop with my parents and to see him get excited about everything and to make it a big occasion for him. I have the fondest memories of school shopping with my mom and then waiting the few weeks before I could wear them for school. We snagged everything here from JCPenney for a STEAL!
Ok, after you snort at how cute his accidental “model” pose is there, let me tell you that this kid has always had a pretty good eye for style. I take some credit, of course, but for a 4-year-old, he could probably do this on his own! He picked out most of the clothes that were “so so cool, mom” out of the Arizona collection; it’s a JCPenney-exclusive brand that I’m obsessed with. I love the subtle Aztec prints and the denim washes. I usually have just 1-2 places that I like to get pants for him because he’s tall and thin, but these straight-leg pants are perfect on him. Grays and blues are going to be in this fall, especially on boys. Of all the things he picked out, this look says “Boston” to me the most. He has always kind of tried to look like the understated SoCal surfer-dude, which cracks me up, ’cause yes, he’s four.
The trend in boys shoes this year is understated and low-profile. I’ve wanted a pair of Vans for him for a while now and I’m stoked that we found some he liked. These are great too because he doesn’t need help to get them on. {And since I had to take a job to pay for said preschool, dad will be dressing him on school mornings. The need for ease here cannot be understated!}
These tan pants are from the IZOD section for uniforms, and I think they are the perfect pair for little bodies. Most of the clothes I like on Boss are in the “Action Sports” style, which is fitting because this kid has a sporty build and loves riding bikes and is obsessed with skateboarding and surfing… I think that’s why this style will be around for a while in San Diego. It’s cute, but also functional. His best friend who is 6 has taught us all about the “best motocross shoes”… etc. It’s good to know we are all set, should we suddenly need to enter that phase of parenthood.
What cracks you up when you are a 4-year-old California boy more than a robot with a surf board? He fake-chuckled like a cute old man at this shirt for 5 minutes.
So I had to post this shirt too… he can’t read, but grabbed this shirt and shouted, “I NEED this! This is the best shirt ever!” [Insert a photo in your mind of me and my parents rolling on the floor at JCPenney here.] He had to have it. To be fair, he IS my child. I likely would have grabbed it too. Nice work, Boss. Again, you’d think I coached him on his fashion blogger-esque posing {don’t look at the camera ever!}, but I swear I didn’t. When you go to JCPenney, ’cause you will, the boys v-necks are awesome and they were buy one get one free when we were there so we got out of there for about an average of $6 per item! We will be heading back in a week or two for a $10 haircut {valid through Aug 31} for sure! How come I wasn’t told about this before?? I blame all of you.
Oh this kid. He has my heart. And I’m completely ready for him to get to school!
So tell me, what trends and styles will you be shopping for this Back-to-School season?
Tell me in the comments for a chance to win $100 JCPenney gift card!
{Which, as I said, will go FAR!}

I love the “rockstar” type clothes for kids such as leather and jean jackets. I also like leggings for girls. I also like the trend toward more athletic like clothes.

My son is older and is in the “need a suit” trend. That is an expensive trend for us, so a win here would go a long way toward getting a new suit! Thanks for a chance to win!
My son would love the athletic trend he also likes graphic tees and camo print.

One trend my kids love and insist upon getting is colored jeans!
A few pairs of some cute print leggings are on my back to school list for my daughter!
I still like the layered look. A v-neck sweater or vest over a lacy shirt is great.
At back to school time, we’re always looking for new jeans and plaid shirts!

Lots of colors!
Hi! I LOVE the hashtag shirt! I have a hard time getting my kindergartner to wear anything other than athletic shorts! So, I’m sure we could add plenty to his collection. I love the outfits your little boy chose.
We keep it simple with jeans and simple shirts, I like these jcp options!
He is so cute! I love his style. I’d probably shop for leggings and dresses for my daughter. It’s hard to convince her to wear anything else!
I don’t have children, so back-to-school is not a thing for me. But I checked out their site and would LOVE to have the Micro Flannel® Comforter Set
web ID: 7202866 in Olive green for the cool nights of fall! Love the color and bet it is so soft!

This is the first year I went shopping for school clothes with my oldest, too! Hooray for us! We didn’t die from separation anxiety! (They say the kids have a hard time, but I’m pretty sure it’s just the parents).
I just bought her some simple easy to match separates, since it’s preschool. The teacher warned us sometimes those “washable” paints and markers don’t wash out, so don’t send them in their favorite clothes.

Well, I confess I’m not going to be doing any school shopping this year. NEXT year, I am so doing this with Caleb when he starts preschool! Boss looks adorable, what a cute kid!
I do have a weight loss goal, which when I achieve it, my husband promised me a whole new wardrobe. $100 to JC Penney would be an awesome motivator!!
I want some lightweight clothes for AZ Fall & Winter. All my stuff is too warm!
My kids wear uniforms, so I would stick up on khakis and polos ?
For my boys I look for fun brighter colored shirts, shirts and jeans. Always bright color tennis shoes! 🙂 for my daughter I am loving the new miss match leggings! She is very picky on what she wears sadly. Lol! 🙂
My 7 year old’s heart desires nothing but skinny jeans!
My son has to be comfortable and screams when he has to wear jeans! Lots of athletic shorts and tshirts for him!
pre-k for my little guy too! I was surprised from your post how JCP has changed! I like getting him skinny jeans and also tops with Aztec prints and also bold colors. He has a lot of sportswear so we would probably focus on getting him more tops and jeans/pants. Your son is so cute!
My daughter is big into skirts, so that for her. My 4 yr old son would get a kick out of the robot surfer as well! Thanks.
I will be shopping for the boyfriend tee with printed leggings

My 4-year-old would pick all of the same colors, or a different pattern for every piece of clothing!
I’m searching for affordable fashion for my kids for back to school. I don’t care about brands as long as it’s good quality and not expensive.
We love going with basics, like v-necks and jeans and then adding pops of color with hoodies and shoes. Your little man is stinkin’ cute!
Anything that is cute! There is really nothing particular.
I will be shopping for more dresses for my daughter.
