I am absolutely in denial that I just took my first kid school shopping, but alas, it happened. And I think this will need to be a tradition to do a photoshoot in his back-to-school clothes. He’s growing up, and every day he surprises me with what he knows. He’s still testing me to see what he can get away with, but he’s a sweet boy and he’s so excited to finally be going to school. It was a blast to shop with my parents and to see him get excited about everything and to make it a big occasion for him. I have the fondest memories of school shopping with my mom and then waiting the few weeks before I could wear them for school. We snagged everything here from JCPenney for a STEAL!

Ok, after you snort at how cute his accidental “model” pose is there, let me tell you that this kid has always had a pretty good eye for style. I take some credit, of course, but for a 4-year-old, he could probably do this on his own! He picked out most of the clothes that were “so so cool, mom” out of the Arizona collection; it’s a JCPenney-exclusive brand that I’m obsessed with. I love the subtle Aztec prints and the denim washes. I usually have just 1-2 places that I like to get pants for him because he’s tall and thin, but these straight-leg pants are perfect on him. Grays and blues are going to be in this fall, especially on boys. Of all the things he picked out, this look says “Boston” to me the most. He has always kind of tried to look like the understated SoCal surfer-dude, which cracks me up, ’cause yes, he’s four. back to school shopping jcpenny 4

The trend in boys shoes this year is understated and low-profile. I’ve wanted a pair of Vans for him for a while now and I’m stoked that we found some he liked. These are great too because he doesn’t need help to get them on. {And since I had to take a job to pay for said preschool, dad will be dressing him on school mornings. The need for ease here cannot be understated!}

These tan pants are from the IZOD section for uniforms, and I think they are the perfect pair for little bodies. Most of the clothes I like on Boss are in the “Action Sports” style, which is fitting because this kid has a sporty build and loves riding bikes and is obsessed with skateboarding and surfing… I think that’s why this style will be around for a while in San Diego. It’s cute, but also functional. His best friend who is 6 has taught us all about the “best motocross shoes”… etc. It’s good to know we are all set, should we suddenly need to enter that phase of parenthood. back to school shopping jcpenny 5

What cracks you up when you are a 4-year-old California boy more than a robot with a surf board? He fake-chuckled like a cute old man at this shirt for 5 minutes. back to school shopping jcpenny 6 back to school shopping jcpenny 7

So I had to post this shirt too… he can’t read, but grabbed this shirt and shouted, “I NEED this! This is the best shirt ever!” [Insert a photo in your mind of me and my parents rolling on the floor at JCPenney here.] He had to have it. To be fair, he IS my child. I likely would have grabbed it too. Nice work, Boss. back to school shopping jcpenny 8 back to school shopping jcpenny 9 back to school shopping jcpenny 10 back to school shopping jcpenny 11 back to school shopping jcpenny 12 Again, you’d think I coached him on his fashion blogger-esque posing {don’t look at the camera ever!}, but I swear I didn’t. When you go to JCPenney, ’cause you will, the boys v-necks are awesome and they were buy one get one free when we were there so we got out of there for about an average of $6 per item! We will be heading back in a week or two for a $10 haircut {valid through Aug 31} for sure! How come I wasn’t told about this before?? I blame all of you. back to school shopping jcpenny 13

Oh this kid. He has my heart. And I’m completely ready for him to get to school!
