perfect sugar cookie pops & halloween craft day!

a great recipe for sugar cookie pops and some fun halloween crafts to do with kids!

Halloween monster sugar cookie pops

last week, my best girlfriend and i had this genius idea to get our kiddos together and make some fun stuff to get in the mood for halloween.

not going to lie, we had more fun than they did.  but they loved it, and after hours of eating sugar and laughing, we realized we should be doing stuff like this more often. stuff that is for the kids, to spend time with friends. so fun.

sandy designed and put together these super cute masks and we all wore them all day… the kids thought they were hilarious and wore them the entire time they were making their craft and cookies. we just giggled and took a million pictures, because who can resist…?

while sandee and the kids painted these little headstones with chalkboard paint. they love painting and actually did a great job on their own.

i found candy eyeballs which made our monster sugar cookies a hit, AND, ready for this: starburst candy corn?! where you been at???

they were so good and we couldn’t stop eating them. {again, who was this activity for? shut up. moms need candy too… }

also, any of these cookies that look legit/have awesome decoration happening, were done by sandee. i have no skill in the art of frosting, she totally does.

perfect sugar cookie {pops}

Ingredients

  • 2 cups unsalted butter, room temp
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 tsps vanilla
  • 5 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder {1/2 tsp for pops to avoid spreading}
  • 1 tsp salt

  • need:
  • parchment paper
  • 8-inch cookie sticks

what to do

combine dry ingredients in a bowl and set aside.

cream sugar and butter in a mixer, but do not over mix! once they’ve come together, add in eggs and vanilla, and then add in dry ingredients until combined. again, do not over mix, this will help the cookies hold their shape so they will not spread.

roll out dough between two sheets of parchment until about 1/4-inch thick. place in the fridge to chill for 20 minutes until slightly firm before cutting your cookie shapes.

cut the shapes and return them to a cookie sheet, leaving space for cookie sticks. while dough is soft, gently insert 8-inch cookie sticks, and return them to the fridge until they firm slightly while you preheat your oven to 350.

bake cookies for 8-12 minutes or until edges start to turn brown, then remove from the oven and let cool completely before frosting.

    Ah I love sugar cookie pops — it is usually my go-to for parties at daycare because they are nut free and my son loves to help decorate. (Plus, I love the ohhhs and ahhhs from the teachers and other parents. Hey, I’m being honest!) But, I must admit, we have signed up to bring in 12 juice boxes for this year’s Halloween party. The night before just happens to be the night my Mom’s Wine Group is getting together for our monthly evening without kids and husbands. And knowing me, I will leave it to the very last minute and will be starting the process around midnight on the 30th. That may not turn out so well…especially after a few glasses of a lovely Carmenere. I will not feel guilty! Kids need to hydrate — that’s important too, right?? 😉
